Packaging Waste

Firstly, consider Conducting an Audit to get your facts straight.

Then:

Reduce:

  • Purchase items with the minimum quantity of packaging.
  • Request reusable and refillable packaging.
  • Reduce the use of bags and packaging at point of sale by only supplying to customers who specifically ask, or by offering alternatives for sale in-store, such as calico bags, string bags, baskets or boxes.
  • Look into other options for the checkout, such as biodegradable bags that are consistent with your checkout design.

Reuse:

  • Reuse boxes and packaging material.

Recycle:

  • Request that suppliers use packaging which is readily recyclable.
  • Set up a recycling station with clearly marked bins for recycling plastic bags, boxes and packaging material.
  • Work with your recycling contractor to reduce contamination and ensure that these materials do get recycled. Clearly mark drop-off bins regarding the type of materials that can be accepted.

Make your aims as public as possible. Inform staff about your intentions and why. Offer further incentives to staff to show your appreciation for their efforts. But remember, "waste reduction is everybody's responsibility".
