Making it Work

First pick an easy target - select just one idea from the planning process - one that is relatively simple and inexpensive to implement. Success with this one will build confidence in the process.

Training

The ongoing training of employees is vital to ensure the success of your program. This can be simple in-house instruction, backed up by clear facilities and signage.

Monitoring

Your waste management requirements will change with your business - you will need to continually check the results and modify your plan.

Establish simple but relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in order to objectively measure your progress - e.g. % yield from raw materials, $ per item produced, % gross profit, etc. Don't 'beat your employees over the head' with KPIs - the emphasis should be on implementing agreed actions and openly evaluating the results.

Maintain ongoing audits and monitor feedback from employees.

Review & Modify

Your waste management plan should be a working document, not one to be filed away and forgotten.

Use the monitoring process to maintain a continuing program of improvement. Persistence is necessary - it won't always work the first time.
