SWSA Business Programs

The SWSA's Non-municipal program is aimed at waste reduction in the commercial and industrial sectors (including building and demolition activities).

Clean Business Challenge

The Clean Business Challenge recognizes that there are important advantages to be gained by industry being seen to 'Do the Right Thing' in relation to the environment. The Challenge is a public recognition program aimed at providing a reward to businesses that practice responsible waste management. Qualifying businesses must be able to demonstrate their commitment to a recognised program of continuous improvement with respect to their waste management practices.

See Clean Business Challenge for full details.

Northgate Shopping Centre Recycling Project

The recently completed Northgate Shopping Centre Recycling Project involved the SWSA, the Packaging Stewardship Forum of the Australian Food and Grocery Council (PSF), formerlly known as the Beverage Industry Environment Council (BIEC), centre management and waste/ recycling contractors. The aim of this project was to integrate techniques such as Public Place Recycling, source separation and the training of retailers, to provide a closed loop waste management solution. The final report/case study can be found in the Publications section of this website.

Wrest Point Recycling Demonstration Project

SWSA is currently involved in a joint 'Hotels & Restaurants' recycling demonstration project with PSF and Wrest Point Hotel.

The project aims to work directly with Hotel management and staff, and recycling contractors, to develop a sustainable improvement program aimed at increasing the recovery of packaging and consumer paper from waste streams. A progress report can be found in the Publications section of this website.

C&I Commingled Recycling Service

This project aims to catalyse the establishment of a new commingled recycling collection service in the business districts of the Hobart metropolitan area, by providing funding to defray some of the start-up costs.

The parties to this project are SWSA, PSF and Veolia Environmental Services (VES).

The service will comprise a 240L weekly commingled MGB collection to be offered to commercial clients within metropolitan Hobart, with VES providing the MGBs, side-lift trucks, and undertaking all logistical, operational, marketing and financial functions.
