Cygnet Folk Festival - Major Events Recycling

Working in conjunction with the Southern Waste Strategy Authority, BIEC and Eastside Recycling, the Cygnet Folk Festival organising committee set up commingled recycling bins in conjunction with the annual folk festival, as part of their recycling commitment.

Actions

Recycling stations were set up at various key locations throughout the Cygnet Township. These were labeled to guide the public, and recycling information was included in the printed program for the event. Public participation was monitored through the quantity of mixed recyclables collected by Eastside Recycling.

Outcomes

Over the weekend, Eastside Recycling recovered 1880kg of mixed recyclables. Anecdotal evidence also suggests that there was less garbage to clean up after the event, than in previous years.

There were one or two bins with excessive garbage contamination - those which were not sited next to garbage bins. All material went through Eastside Recycling's Material Recovery Facility for separation and recycling of the individual components.
