A Taste of the Huon - Major Events Recycling

Objective

Working in conjunction with the Southern Waste Strategy Authority, BIEC and Eastside Recycling, the Taste of the Huon organisers set up commingled recycling bins in conjunction with the annual event, as part of their recycling commitment.

Actions

Recycling stations were set up at various key locations throughout the site. These were labeled to guide the public, and recycling information was included in the printed program for the event. Public participation was monitored through the quantity of mixed recyclables collected by Eastside Recycling.

Outcomes

Over the weekend, Eastside Recycling recovered 500kg of mixed recyclables. A random sample was selected from this total, and the composition was as follows:

  • Glass 90.3%
  • Aluminium 0.3%
  • PET 0.3%
  • HDPE 0.1%
  • Contamination* 9.0%

*The contamination consisted mainly of plastic food and drink containers- mostly PP, which is not recyclable.
