Jazz on the Water Festival - Major Events Recycling
ObjectiveThe Clarence City Council, organizers of the annual Jazz on the Water Festival, used Recycling Stations provided by the SWSA and BIEC, and serviced by Eastside Recycling to separate commingled recyclables from garbage.
Actions
BIEC/ SWSA provided recycling Stations for this popular event, on Hobart's eastern shore. The Stations comprise three sections, with appropriate signage, with the two outer sections used for commingled recyclables, and the central section for garbage.
240 litre bins were trialed, to test the trade-off between lower bin servicing frequency and the ease of servicing. The bins were lined and serviced by the organizers' clean team, with recyclables stockpiled for removal by Eastside Recycling at the conclusion of the event.
Outcomes
1.8 tonnes of recyclables were collected, and successfully processed through Eastside's Materials Recovery Facility - contamination levels were acceptable.
Whilst the reduced frequency of bin servicing was realised, the 240 litre bins were considered excessively heavy for servicing, with heavy-duty bin liners also a minimum requirement.
