Councils

Southern Tasmanian Councils provide a large range of waste recycling and disposal services and facilities for residential and commercial use.

The availability of kerbside recycling services varies due to a number of factors, most notably the viability of providing the service, especially in sparsely populated areas.



Materials currently collected by domestic kerbside services in southern Tasmania are shown in the table titled Kerbside Recycling Services.

Most Council landfills have evolved in recent years, to become Waste Management Centres, incorporating 'Tip Shops', recycling drop-off centres, and segregated disposal areas. 'Tip Shops are generally privately operated, and these organisations are listed separately on this site. Many former wastes are reprocessed and reused (e.g. Garden Waste is typically shredded, composted with other wastes and used for site rehabilitation).

Council facilities will accept a wide range of waste, but often require that particular items be separated to ensure the safest method of recycling/ disposal.
