Waste Reduction Objectives

  • Reduce paper waste by introduction of recycling scheme.
  • Give the students and staff the means to recycle the paper.
  • Promote the message of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, throughout the school.
  • Find ways to reuse the paper befor recycling.

Actions

  • Posters were put up around the school to encourage staff and students to reuse and recycle paper. The message was also spread during assemblies and through the daily bulletin.
  • Teachers and office staff were educated in ways to reduce the ammount of paper they used. Recycling messages and instructions on how to do double-side when photocopying, were placed near every photocopier.
  • Competitions were held throughout the school to further promote the recycling message.
  • Each homeroom decorated an empty reflex box with recycled material, for collecting clean waste paper, to make paper products, such as note paper, cards, bookmarks and gift tags. These items were then sold at the school fair to raise funds for the school.
  • I.T. Staff have set up an 'L' Drive on the school intranet, which allows the students and staff to submit and receive work electronically, eliminating the need for paper.

Outcomes

  • Every classroom has a reuse box for collecting paper that has only been used on one side, which is then used as scrap paper.
  • Staff and students have all been using the recycling boxes to collect used paper. This has resulted in a considerable reduction in paper waste, and a more environmentally responsible attitude towards paper recycling. More teachers are now asking students to submit completed work on the 'L' Drive.
