Warranwood Primary School, Melbourne, Victoria
Warranwood Primary School is a school of approximately 730 children from Prep-Grade 6, situated in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The school has many environmental programs in place throughout the school and has plans underway for further activities and programs to be developed. We have a paper and cardboard recycling program in place which is run solely by the students and the responsibility for the collection of materials and organisation involved is also theirs. The paper is collected from around the school twice a week and is collected by the council every Monday morning. The children who do the paper run are also responsible for checking that there are no contaminating materials in the bins.
Our compost system is operational in all grades in the school and again, is run by the children. They are responsible for the collection of waste from the classroom, then emptying it into the compost bins, and once it has decomposed adequately, they remove it to use on the garden beds. The school has a number of garden bed areas, the maintenance of which is the responsibility of the students.
Each class has a HERO (Heating, Electricity, and Recycling Officer) who is responsible for each of the areas during their week of duty.
We will hold regular Rubbish Free lunch days during the year as well as participating in activities such as Clean up Schools Day and Waste Wise school awards and Schools gardens awards. We endeavour to introduce a co-mingled recycling program during the year.
