Aluminium Cans
See also Metals - Other.
Aluminium is produced from the mineral bauxite using an electrolytic process that consumes large quantities of energy. Making aluminium from recycled cans uses only 5% of the energy required to make it from the raw material, and saves 5 tonnes of bauxite for every one tonne of cans recycled (Comalco, 1992).
Up to 64% of Australian aluminium cans were recycled by 1998 (Aluminium Can Group, George Unger & Assoc, Kaal Australia).
Kerbside collections are operated in most areas of southern Tasmania - check with your local Council. There are also recycling drop-off areas at many landfills. To recycle - rinse cans in cold water and crush (Look for a handy can-crusher at your local hardware shop).
