Steel Cans

Steel containers are often used for the storage of food and other items. Your unwanted tins may be reusable - talk to your tip shop.
Steel food cans, clean paint cans, aerosol cans (do not puncture or squash!), and steel container lids are all recyclable - some 40% of steel cans were recycled in 1999 (BHP, 1999).
Recycling steel cans is good for our environment, because it takes 87% less energy to make recycled steel than to produce it from raw materials (Grant et al, 1999).
Most southern Tasmanian Councils operate kerbside recycling services that accept steel cans - check with your local Council. Steel cans are magnetic, which can help in the separation stage of the recycling process. It will also help you to identify them - a fridge magnet will stick to a steel can, but not to an aluminium can. To recycle - remove the lid, rinse the can, place lid inside can and squash the top of the can, so the lid falls inside.
